  • Drink more water, regardless of type of activity being carried out, and don't wait until you're thirsty. The elderly and chronically ill should take care to avoid dehydration.
  • In general, you should avoid drinking caffeinated beverages, alcoholic or anything too sugary.
  • Also, avoid eating large meals and easily contaminated foods (salads with mayonnaise, etc.) and choose a diet rich in fruits and vegetables (taking care to wash them before eating).
  • For the most vulnerable, it is better to stay at home on the very hot days.
  • For the rest, don't stay out in the sun too long or sunbathe at times when the sun is more vertical (12pm – 4pm).
  • We must take the sun gradually and with caution (start with sessions of 15 to 20 minutes and increase not to exceed two hours exposure).
  • It is always advisable to use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15.
  • Children under three years should not sunbathe.
  • Use air conditioning sparingly at a temperature of approximately 24 degrees.
  • If, despite these preventive measures you have symptoms of heat illness, it is recommended to cool off with a sponge or wet towels, a bath if you're not dizzy, drink nonalcoholic, cold liquids and if symptoms do not subside, seek a doctor as soon as possible.
  • It is important to reduce physical activity and exercise outdoors when the heat is excessive, and protect yourself with a hat and wear comfortable clothes if you finally have to leave home.
