Gran Canaria Weather December

Ah here we are, December in Gran Canaria once again. The month of beautiful orange burst sunsets and cooler evenings after a day on the beach. Daytime temperatures can still get to 28ºC degrees, so don't be surprised to see Santa Claus at the beach. While day time is hot, there is a 10-15ºC degree drop of an evening, so it's best to take a cardigan or light jacket to dinner.

Below is a video of typical December weather in Puerto Rico by the beach and harbour. Note that people are enjoying their winter sunshine in shorts and t-shirts. 😎

27th December 2022

Snow, rain, wind, calima??? The Canary Islands are well known for their microclimate and as I sit here in a very dusty, windy and cool Gran Canaria with a thick grey calima, Tenerife and La Palma have enjoyed the first snow of the season up in the mountain peaks. Mount Teide volcano in Tenerife is currently covered in snow and guests of the Hotel Parador Las Cañadas del Teide were evacuated yesterday due to the snowy weather and road closures. See video below!

Guests leaving the Hotel Parador Las Cañadas del Teide

The hotel is in the National Park by the volcano and is an amazing place to stay. We've visited in September and it was warm weather, obviously it's not snowing up there everyday and this is a special occurence.

So what's happening for the last week of 2022 in Gran Canaria? We currently have weather warnings for suspended dust/calima pollutants, which is why the sky is greyed out. There's also very high wind gusts of 90 km/h, causing fallen trees and incidents. Plus we have big waves which have made the sea extremely choppy. It's very dry at the moment but Gran Canaria could see some rain later on today.

The current temperature in south Gran Canaria is about 22ºC which feels cooler because of the wind and complete cloud cover. The Air Quality is Unhealthy with the main pollutant being PM10, everyone should take care, especially if you have any respiratory illness including asthma or any cold/flu type virus.

So in summary, AEMET weather warnings in place for Gran Canaria are:

  • Orange weather warning for high wind gusts of 90 km/h – important risk
  • Yellow weather warning for big waves and force 7 wind conditions at sea – risk
  • Yellow weather warning for calima dust (suspended PM10 particles) – risk

Please take care and we will keep you updated.

The first week of December 2022 could see some rain in south Gran Canaria. According to AEMET we have a rainy weekend on the cards and snow in the mountain peaks. We will keep you updated.

2021

13th December 2021

So far December has blessed us with some lovely sunshine and as we head towards Winter solstice we have been enjoying daytime temperatures of around 24ºC degrees. The evenings can feel a little cooler but nothing a cardigan or light jacket won't fix when sitting outside. Daytime is perfect for the beach and there were people enjoying a swim today at Costa Alegre natural pool in Arguineguin.

There is however news of a storm incoming from the Atlantic Ocean which is set to hit the island of La Palma from Tuesday 14th and expected on the rest of the islands from Wednesday 15th as it sweeps East.

Forecasts show there could be a drop in temperature of around 6 degrees which could get a little ‘chilly' depending on which part of Gran Canaria you are on. It's possible that we might also have a light dusting of snow on the mountain peaks at Pozo de las Nieves by midweek.

2020

1st December 2020

November ended with Storm Clement bringing much needed rain and a cold front to the Canary Islands.

AEMET have issued heavy rain warnings. According to the US National Hurricane Center, if conditions continue, Clement could transit into a subtropical storm and would be renamed Kappa.

Merry Christmas Eve Eve! It's currently 17:30h and the sun is still shining after quite a hot day in south Gran Canaria. We have a calima and a bit of a dusty sky. Temperatures have been about 28ºC degrees at the hottest time of the day. Perfect for sitting at your favourite bar and soaking up some vitamin D as these people did yesterday in Playa del Inglés.

We've had very pleasant weather here in south Gran Canaria for majority of the first half of the month. Daytime has been mostly blue sky, sunshine and great for sunbathing.

The sun sets around 18:00h and then you can feel a drop in temperature by about 10ºC degrees, which in comparison with daytime can feel cool. While you can enjoy swimwear, shorts and t-shirt during the day, jackets and hoodies are recommended for the evening.

Around 08:00h this morning we had heavy rain in Gran Canaria south, which soon moved on to reveal a hot sunny sky. As the afternoon rolls round, the clouds are back, with around 35% chance of rain.

North Gran Canaria has an orange weather warning for rough seas and the mountains are on yellow warning for high winds. There's also a chance of snow in Gran Canaria's mountain peaks and weather alerts for high winds in parts of Tenerife including Mt Teide.

December 1st 2019

Carrying on from the very warm end to November this year, the calima continues to push hot air from the Sahara. Today's temperatures have been around 29ºC degrees falling a little cooler this evening. The weather was stunning in south Gran Canaria as it has been all weekend.

2017

December 20th 2017

It's officially the first day of Winter in Gran Canaria. Daytime temperatures are around mid 20ºs and great for sunbathing if you get find a sun spot.

The wind has been very gusty this week due to a calima from the Sahara. Despite this, the evenings are really cooling down so make sure you have a jacket as night time temperatures can get to 14ºC degrees, sometimes cooler depending on which part of Gran Canaria you are in.

Blues skies, check. Sunshine, check! We also have really gusty winds at the moment here in south Gran Canaria. Evenings have really cooled down in comparison with the daytime too. I've needed my hoodie and scarf at times, but that is because I'm so used to it being much warmer. A calima is present, the mountains were VERY hazy yesterday.

The temperature is actually 20ºC degrees today but if you get yourself set up in a little sunspot where you are out of the wind, you can probably enjoy the sun on your bones no problem. As I've mentioned before, it's very difficult to predict more than a few days ahead for Gran Canaria weather but at the moment it looks like we have rain on the way for Monday.

2016

December 3rd 2016

As predicted, we had a much warmer day than usual today in the south of Gran Canaria. I went to El Tablero Shopping Center and was pleasantly surprised to see they were setting up an ice rink! I can't wait to see it once it has people skating on it, what a novelty that will be with the sun shining!

AEMET have now issued a yellow weather warning for high winds in Gran Canaria starting from midnight tonight (Friday) extending to 16:00h Saturday afternoon.

We are expecting wind gusts up to 70 km/h all over the island except for the North. No rain to speak of so far but I will keep you updated. If you have any plant pots or loose items on your balcony, it might be worth securing them just in case.

December 1st 2016

According to weather reports from various sources, the Canary Islands are in for a stormy weekend. This next episode of weather is going to bring warmer temperatures on Friday but then we are in for a drop in temperatures on Saturday or Sunday. The cold front is bringing some high winds along with it, which are expected on Thursday evening in La Palma and Tenerife, so we should get them shortly after here in Gran Canaria and possibly some heavy rain.

The weather forecast is showing 100% chance of rain on Saturday here in the south-west of Gran Canaria.

There are still a lot of different reports coming in and no weather warnings from AEMET just yet. I'm sure this will change later and I will keep you updated.

2015

December 31st 2015

It's time to say goodbye to 2015 already! Compared with other years, this December has been very warm with calima episodes but in general the sky has been cloudless and blue. Temperatures have been in the high 20's and evenings a little cooler but not too bad.

Wow what a boring 2 weeks of weather we've had. 😉 Hot sunshine and calima conditions. Not very blue skies as the calima clouds have been hovering for a while now. Sunsets are at their best and beautifully orange as you can see from this one taken this evening in Arguineguin above Las Marañuelas beach.

Daytime temperatures have been a whopping 30ºC degrees and evenings a little cooler, but perfect for getting a lovely Winter suntan.

The forecast for the next few days is looking very much the same, hazy skies and sunshine. From Sunday that could change, especially in the north of Gran Canaria where we could have some rain clouds and showers. Temperatures are expected to stay the same next week. I will update when I get more info.

There is still a calima hovering over the island so until the wind stops blowing from the East, the wispy clouds will keep coming back, like they did this afternoon. When the sun is out in full force, temperatures are getting to about 28ºC degrees, although evenings are cooler.

This video of Puerto Rico harbour taken today shows just how lovely it is and in December!

With hazy skies and daytime temperatures around 36ºC degrees, you might easily think it was August in Puerto Rico. However the current hot weather is caused by the calima which is hovering over the island. Check out the lovely blue sky over Shopping Center Puerto Rico today!

We had a very warm start to December with a calima in the air. That was the cause for the hazy looking sky yesterday and higher temperatures. The afternoon turned grey and windy, then we had rain during the evening. Today the sky was bright blue and clear over the Shopping Center in Puerto Rico, which is decorated for Christmas. Daytime temperatures are around 28ºC degrees.

Warm air is currently blowing over from Africa, bringing with it the Saharan Air Layer. Which basically means it's a warm start to the month, with suspended sand in the air. AEMET have actually issued a weather warning about this calima, which is no surprise as it's been so hot and dusty today.

The calima warning is for the whole island of Gran Canaria except for the north, from 18:00h – 00:00h on Tuesday 1st December.

UPDATE: After a sweaty, dusty day (I haven't stopped sneezing since last night!) it turned cloudy this afternoon. It's cooled down again and is currently raining in Arguineguin. The forecast says we could have some more rain in the night, which should get rid of some of today's dust that's been blowing around.

2014

December 31st 2014

AEMET have issued a yellow weather warning for suspended sand known as a calima in Gran Canaria. So far the warning is extended to the end of New Year’s Day. AEMET have since extended this to midnight Sunday 4th January.

Can you believe it is December? Today's photos are a great example of why more and more people choose Gran Canaria for their winter sunshine holidays. Puerto Rico GC Storm in December 2013

December 10th 2013

As promised here is my update on the storm heading towards Gran Canaria. Earlier today, in the south of Gran Canaria the wind was strong, big waves down at the beaches and the red flag was flying at Patalavaca beach.

Stormy December on Patalavaca Beach

Amadores Beach in Puerto Rico looked particularly stormy today, although sunny enough for sun seekers to enjoy a couple of hours relaxation. The waves were very choppy and the sea did not look happy at all.

UPDATE:
19:50h – the wind has died down and it’s very calm outside. It does however feel like there has been a drop in temperature. The high winds and large waves warnings we’ve had for today will continue until at least Thursday and from tomorrow at 09:00h the whole of Gran Canaria is on orange warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms.

So far AEMET predict this will continue through Thursday. As you can see Tenerife and La Palma have red warning and already the storm has brought winds of 120 km/h on El Hierro.

School Closures:
Schools across the islands will be closed 11th December EXCEPT for those in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, but as this can change, please make sure to check with your institutes for exact information.

Stay tuned, if anything else occurs this evening I will add it to this post.

December 9th 2013

AEMET have issued several storm warnings for this week as a storm approaches the Canary Islands. Here in Gran Canaria south today it’s been grey and very windy for the whole day.

Tuesday 10th December we are also on warning for high winds but also waves.

Wednesday 11th December is upgraded to orange weather warning and includes storms and heavy rain. Looking at the forecast for the week, it looks like once the rain starts on Wednesday, it will continue until the weekend.

December 3rd 2013

The weather in Gran Canaria this week has been a bit stormy, if you were following the live weather reports I gave in yesterday’s blog post then you will understand.

It poured down last night, and throughout the night so I expected to wake up to more rain, but those beautiful blue skies where back and so was the hot sun. It was hot enough to sunbathe, there were people on Patalavaca beach, the sun was actually out but off camera. The scary storm cloud wasn’t stopping them from enjoying a dip in the sea.

Gran Canaria Weather December Patalavaca Storm 2013
Patalavaca Storm December 2013

The south area of Gran Canaria did get a lot of rain, but no where near as some places in Tenerife, La Palma, or El Hierro where the level of salt in the ocean actually reduced because the rain was so intense there.

Looking at the forecasts, things are supposed to be better for the next couple of days and the weather warnings have been lifted, but Meteorologist Vicky Palma said that the storm could roll back round again for Friday, when we could get more rain. So enjoy the sunshine!

December 2nd 2013

AEMET have issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain in Gran Canaria from 02/12/13 – 03/12/13 at 9pm. The heavy rain is expected to affect the whole island.

The stormy weather is worse on the western islands where the level has been raised to orange.

The Government advise to stick to main roads and highways if driving in this weather and try to stay away from forest paths and trails.

Gran Canaria Weather Updates:
11:45h – The actual weather in the south of Gran Canaria is cooler than usual, with grey skies. The warning went into effect at 11am, so we may have heavy rain later in the day. So far in Arguineguin, there have been some very small showers and spitting, but no heavy downpours as yet.

13:00h – The sun is still out despite the clouds in San Fernando de Maspalomas. People are walking round in shorts and t-shirts. Things look worse towards the mountains, there is a low cloud looking very threatening.

13.30h – Decided to drive up to the cloud and to the lookout point of Degollada de las Yeguas. There is usually a great view of Playa del Ingles from up here and of the lush barranco. Not today. It’s misty but not raining heavy, just really bad visibility and cold enough for a jumper.

14:00h – Playa del Ingles has sunshine coming through the clouds and it feels warm compared to up at the lookout point.

18:00h – Grey skies have been lurking most of the day and now suddenly we have a huge downpour of rain. I can see it raining again during the night.

There has been some severe rain in Tenerife and La Palma.

The warning is, so far until 20th December at 00:00hrs although the northern part of the island today has seen some heavy rain too, which moved down toward the south of the island later in the afternoon.

As I mentioned in the last Puerto Rico weather post on Saturday, there has been a very dusty atmosphere, caused by sand from the Sahara. This said, today seems to have cleared and the blue skies are coming back, which also means the temperatures are getting back to what is normal for December. (mid 20's)

The calima as it is known, can occur at different times of year and usually increases temperature, but when combined with wind gusts and being Winter, it means the evenings and early mornings have been a bit cooler. They do say it gets cold in the desert at night.

This phenomena will probably last for the next few days with daytime temperatures in the mid 20’s, which is pleasant for December. If you are visiting Puerto Rico from colder climes then you will be sure to warm your body here in Paradise!

Gran Canaria is on a yellow weather alert from tomorrow night for heavy rain and wind, but the temperatures at the moment are pleasant with 24ºC degrees and the sky has even lightened up a little.

AEMET have issued yellow weather alerts for wind and rain in the Canary Islands from today Wednesday 15th – Friday 17th December 2010.

A storm is said to be approaching from the Atlantic Ocean and will affect the western islands mainly and gradually moving across, affecting Gran Canaria in the early hours of Friday morning. Gran Canaria may see some gusty wind up to 75 km/h and heavy rain.

December 5th 2010

Although we had a storm warning for today, so far hasn’t been too bad. The clouds are a lot lower than usual so it had been a bit misty and the mountains almost disappeared, but when the sun was out it was hot.

The weather warning from AEMET has now been downgraded to yellow but we could be due rain everyday from now up until Thursday. We had a shower in the night/early morning but it soon went.

Stay tuned to our reports for more updates, here is a webcam still of the harbour in Puerto Rico showing the clouds.

Gran Canaria is forecast winds of 80-90 km/h with heavy rainfall. The latest storm is said to start early hours of Sunday morning.

2009

December 21st 2009

We have yet another weather warning, there seem to be a lot this month but, it’s important to know about them. Flights were cancelled and delayed earlier on this evening in La Palma and La Gomera due to the strong winds.

The Canary Islands in general have been on and off yellow alert for the past week for storms and torrential rain. AEMET have put yellow and orange alerts in place for strong winds in all of the islands.

The yellow alert is for Monday 21st December 2009, and will affect the mountains ‘cumbres‘ of the island with wind gusts up to 75 km/h. Then on Tuesday 22nd December 2009 we are on orange alert which is more severe and will see gusts of wind up to 95 km/h and is said to affect the whole island. This is very likely to be accompanied by rain for the next 3 days or so.

December 16th 2009

Although December seemed to start off sunny, we have had a lot of cloud over the last week with quite a few rain showers with some thunder and lightening thrown into the mix.

After getting through the last weather warning and with plenty of downpours today, AEMET have announced yet another yellow alert for the Canary Islands.

The storm, which has made an appearance already will see heavy rain in the western province of the Gran Canaria, particularly in the west, south and east and will start off in the island of La Palma. We are also to see strong winds and coastal phenomena mainly in the northern parts.

UPDATE: 17/12/09 – Gran Canaria is back on alert from Thursday evening 17/12/09 to Friday 18/12/09 for rain and wind gusts of up to 70 km/h.

December 11th 2009

AEMET have declared a yellow weather warning for the Canary Islands starting from Friday 11th December 2009. Heavy rain is expected from around midday on the left hand side of the archipelago and across toward Gran Canaria.

After the last weather alert of 17th November 2009 when whole barrancos collapsed in Tenerife and floods caused chaos in Las Palmas the government take no chances in making sure the public know what to expect weather wise. We may have around 60mm of rain in 12 hours.

2008

December 31st 2008

The Guardia Civil of Las Palmas have registered more than 30 accidents due to the bad weather. Don’t pack your wellies just yet, although I could have done with a pair last night. I had a walk around Puerto Rico Shopping Center and I stood in a few big puddles. The bottoms of my jeans were soaked by the end of the night. (The curse of being short!)

So it seems the sun has made an appearance today and the warning we had last night of thunder and lightning didn’t seem to happen. We have a few clouds today with around 22ºC degrees.

I can see big clouds at the back of my house but more towards the mountains.

So looks like all those people going to outdoor fiestas tonight for New Year’s Eve won’t have to worry.

After a few nice days it looks like we have a big storm on the way to the Canary Islands.

Hitting to the left of the islands first La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera and Tenerife there is yellow warning for heavy rain today, storms, and wind.

Then tomorrow, that yellow warning comes to Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote with the same storm and it's meant to get worse for Tenerife. So get those wellies ready, bring the washing in and batten down the hatches to prepare for the storm.

As always I will keep you updated just incase it blows over but I doubt it as I have just examined the satellite and there is a beastie cloud headed this way!

Another scorcher today, with 28ºC degrees in Arguineguin and Las Palmas enjoyed 24ºC degrees. Looking over to the hills near Telde there was a huge cloud and it looked like it was raining in the mountains.

Please remember although it may be clouded over or cooler than usual it is still very important to wear sunscreen

It’s ‘cracking the flags’ today in Puerto Rico, it feels really warm, but with a big breeze coming from Tenerife direction. Slap that sun cream on!

December 26th 2008

Today’s weather in the south of Gran Canaria is nice and bright, clear sunny skies with around 22ºC degrees in Arguineguin. La Palma and Tenerife still have weather warnings for heavy rain and strong winds for today and tomorrow.

December 25th 2008

Merry Christmas to you all or as we say here Feliz Navidad! The skies are bright blue and it’s quite hot today, great for those Christmas Day snaps!

December 24th 2008

As predicted it did rain today but not constant just a shower every now and then. The blue sky even made a slight appearance before hiding again under the big cloud that seems to have made itself comfortable over the Canary Islands.

According to AEMET we are on yellow warning for heavy rain on all islands, so let’s hope it doesn't interfere with the Christmas Eve celebrations.

So the question is do you stay in and watch a Christmas movie avoiding the cold 15ºC degrees or go out and take shelter in a bar?

Who knows it might not rain more but I think the clouds would argue that? It's currently 20ºC degrees in Arguineguin and cloudy.

UPDATE:
It rained all over apparently. I was in the mountains celebrating with a traditional Noche Buena meal. There was thunder and lightening and then a downpour, as we drove past Arguineguin the rain seemed worse.

December 23rd 2008

For the last month or so the weather has been very strange indeed, first it was cloudy and struggling to reach 25ºC degrees, and for the last week or so it has been very windy, almost like a cold calima.

My inflatable Santa Claus was flying around the other night and I had to reel him in off the balcony where he will be staying until the wind dies down.

Yesterday seemed foggy like damp in the air and Las Palmas seemed warmer than the south for a change. You couldn’t see the horizon out at sea and it has felt a bit dusty too.

Today the sun has definitely got his hat on, although there is still a strong wind and with 20ºC degrees in Arguineguin.

Looking at the satellites there is a large cloud lingering over Africa that is going to cause a weather warning of heavy rain in Tenerife and strong possibility of rain here on Gran Canaria on Christmas Eve.

Night-times are a lot cooler now with around 14-15ºC degrees (that is very cool if you have been in the sun all day) and so cardigans or light jackets may be needed but if you are a local you may need more, I even wore my woolly scarf the other day!

I will keep you posted about this big lingering cloud and if we get any rain or not.

December 10th 2008

According to the webcam in Arguineguin it is around 22ºC degrees. The sun isn’t out (it’s trying) and it feels cold brr!

December 2nd 2008

Still cloudy today, seems to be lingering around the islands and is forecast for the next week. Usually we have one or two cloudy days and then it clears up, but not in this case.

December 1st 2008

We didn’t notice any big waves down here in the south and today has been really strange. The sun was cracking the flags and then the next thing it was dull and overcast, then sunny again.
