May 1st 2022
Happy May 1st! It's also Mother's Day and workers day here in Gran Canaria. Plenty to celebrate and all with beautiful sunshine. It's starting to get quite hot in the day time now and it feels like Summer is right around the corner. Today we had some things to do in Playa del Inglés so we stopped by the Maspalomas Sand Dunes to take some photos and admire the view.

Temperatures have been reaching 30ºC degrees which is perfect for sunbathing and enjoying a swim in the ocean. Evenings are still pleasant and comfortable to sleep. Here's how the weather is looking for the first week of May: hot sunshine with a bit of cloud and a yellow weather warning for wind for Monday 2nd May.

May 31st 2021
After a cloudy start to the day, the sun came out in full force with bright blue sky for the last day of May 2021. The UV index is currently 10 which means the sun is very strong and can burn skin easily so please do tan safely. Summer is creeping closer with temps expected to reach 28ºC degrees the first week of June.
This is what the last day of May looks like on Puerto de Mogan beach in south west Gran Canaria.

30th May 2018 – Día de Canarias
Happy Canary Islands Day! What a fantastic day to celebrate the islands. The sky is a beautiful blue with a few wispy clouds and the sunshine is a reminder of the hot summer that is just around the corner and what to expect in June.
Here’s what the sunset looks like this time of year taken last night at 20:40h on Las Marañuelas beach in Arguineguin. It was so beautiful and Mount Teide made an appearance too!

18th May 2018
We've had a cloudy but pleasant day here in Gran Canaria. We left the south early to visit Las Palmas and although the sky was clouded over the temperature was about 21ºC degrees and many tour groups were enjoying the historic district of Vegueta in short sleeves. Santa Ana Cathedral was a hot spot for visitors today as was Casa de Colón.

10th May 2018
Here on the island we are enjoying a beautiful spring and this photo was taken during a wander through the streets of Arguineguin. We've had constant gorgeous blue skies and sunshine with more to come. The UV index is set to rise this week so burn time in the sun will be shorter so make sure you have the right sunscreen.

We do have a yellow weather warning for rough seas which is set to last until Sunday 13th May so please pay attention to any beach flags and use common sense while swimming.

26th May 2016
We've had quite an intense few days of hot weather, not really a heatwave, just a preview of what's to come in Summer. Today however has clouded over a little and the air is a bit cooler than previous days. Here's the forecast for the weekend as we head into June.

We have a light drop in temperature and rain is expected for parts of Gran Canaria today, including the south. It's starting to look pretty cloudy in Playa del Ingles this afternoon.

May 15th 2016
This time last year we had crazy ‘hair dryer' temperatures of 40ºC, air con season began and Summer was there to stay. This year however it seems the first big heatwave is taking its time.
Daytime temps are currently around 29ºC degrees (hot enough) but there is a cooler breeze of an evening. Saying that, this afternoon those 3D style clouds have made an appearance which can be a sign of a calima. Here's a screenshot from Puerto de Mogán webcam, which does show a bit of cloud.

May 6th 2016
Here's a quick update as I've been asked so many times, if it's going to rain or not. We've had some cloudy starts this week with a cooler feeling in the air but very hot at times too. We are forecast some rain because of a storm currently to the west of the islands in the Atlantic.

AEMET have also issued a heavy rain warning for the Canary Islands, which so far is only affecting the north of Gran Canaria. According to the forecast we could see it turning cloudy Saturday evening with rain showers all day Sunday in the south, then on and off until Wednesday.
May 4th 2016
Happy Star Wars Day! May the 4th be with you. What a beautiful start to May, the sun is shining and blue sky makes it feel like Summer in Puerto Rico Gran Canaria. Temperatures are in the high 20's, which makes it perfect sunbathing weather!

We took a short walk round the harbour (Puerto Base) and then headed up the steps by Grill Costa Mar restaurant. From there you can see across to the other harbour (Puerto Escala) and Puerto Rico beach. There were a few people fishing off the rocks and boats were in and out of the harbour.
May 2nd 2016
Hello May 2016! The feel of Summer is definitely in the air! The long bank holiday weekend was perfect for heading to the beach. Families where still on Las Marañuelas beach in Arguineguin at 19:00h this evening. The sky was quite hazy looking over towards Anfi del Mar with blue skies inland.

The forecasts are showing possible showers for next weekend. It's difficult to predict more than a few days in advance though, so that could easily pass. The UV index is high at 9, so it doesn't take long for skin to burn, even on a cloudy day and temperatures are coasting in the high 20's.

May 11th 2015
AEMET have issued a yellow weather warning for a hot spell of weather in Gran Canaria as temperatures of 34ºC degrees are expected on the island. So far the warning is from Monday 11th at 11:00h until at least 19:00h Tuesday evening when the warning spreads to the rest of the Canary Islands.

The temperatures have been climbing in the last couple of days and it's very easy to get burnt, with a very high UV index of 11.
The heatwave is going to affect the south, west, east and the mountain peaks where there is a risk of forest fires. Please do not do any grilling if visiting the mountains! According to reports, the temperatures should return to what is normal for May, by Friday.

Our photo of the day was taken on Amadores Beach earlier this morning, Mr Pigeon was admiring the view. Early risers were setting up their space on the sand and loungers for the day, others were taking a beach walk after breakfast.

Later on we went to San Agustin where it was cloudy with sunny intervals but not really sunbathing weather compared with Amadores beach this morning.
Nothing to stop you from relaxing on a sun lounger though with a good book, playing some beach tennis or walking along the coast. The temperature in San Agustin this afternoon was around 24ºC degrees, so it was perfect for enjoying a drink in El Capitan Restaurant which overlooks the beach.

May 23rd 2014
Today was quite a cloudy day, some blue sky peeking through, windy with temperatures around 26ºC degrees, perfect for walking along this rugged bit of coastline and past the hotels in Bahia Feliz.

A pleasant walk finished in a small cafe (next door to Hiperdino supermarket) the apple crumble cake is delicious as are the nutella waffles!
May 21st 2014
Today’s little beach stroll was at Anfi del Mar, walking from the parking by the Norwegian school and down to the public beach path, past the beach, toward the marina, round love heart island’s Maroa Beach Club and back again.
There were plenty of spare sun loungers as most people were enjoying laying on the sand and sunbathing. Temperatures were around 28ºC degrees and perfect for tanning, with a light breeze from the Atlantic.

May 19th 2014
Sometimes all you need in the day is a little detour to the beach. It was the perfect day to just look across at the Atlantic Ocean and the natural pool of La Lajilla beach in fishing village Arguineguin. The weather so far this month has been absolutely beautiful, day times have been pretty hot around 29ºC degrees but evenings are still cool enough to feel comfortable. It's really starting to feel like Summer already!

May 9th 2014
Well it does look like we are in for that heatwave I mentioned. AEMET have since issued the following warning:
From Sunday 11th May the Canaries will be affected by a entry of warm and dry air from Africa which will produce very high temperatures. The temperatures are expected to be most intense on Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th through until Friday 16th May when they will begin to descend.

Highs of 37ºC degrees are to be expected in parts of the islands, including the mountains of Gran Canaria.
This heatwave will be accompanied by calima (The Saharan Air Layer – a mass of suspended dust and sand) – the most affected islands will be Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria. Right now in Gran Canaria South, it’s sunny and hot with a little haze which was visible last night at sunset.
May 7th 2014
It’s been some time since we’ve had any weather warnings from AEMET but from 8th May we have a yellow warning for high winds in the mountains of Gran Canaria. The wind is expected to reach up to 70km/h and so far extends to 9th May.
At the same time, temperatures are predicted to be on the rise for the weekend with a increase in the UV index to 11 in the south and in these next few days a slight chance of rain in the north of Gran Canaria.

It looks like we will see temperatures up to 34ºC degrees (in the south) and hazy skies around Tuesday 13th, according to the forecast, which usually indicates a calima (suspended sand in the atmosphere).

May 16th 2013
Today was a particularly grey day and I thought it was the perfect afternoon to visit IKEA in Telde. Leaving the south, the sky wasn’t too bad but as soon as we had driven past Playa del Ingles and San Agustin, the clouds began to look a little darker.
May is not a usual month to have rain in Gran Canaria, but we do have the few odd days. We weren’t even past Vecindario when the rain turned quite heavy.
On arriving at IKEA it was only spitting but a bit windy and cold compared to the south. Although friends did contact and tell me that the dark cloud had proceeded over to Playa del Ingles and it was raining a little.

This is the view from the IKEA restaurant, which was the first place we headed for a drink and some meatballs with chips. Shopping is always an option in Gran Canaria when it rains, which is rarely does.

This evening the Canarian flag flew proudly over Puerto Rico beach for Canary Islands day. The sign of Gran Canaria Restaurant overlooking Puerto Rico beach and sun loungers was an appealing photo opportunity. Even at 19:00h it was still a great time to be enjoying the last few hours of sunshine on the beach.

May 11th 2012
AEMET have issued a yellow weather warning for high temperatures of 34ºc degrees in Gran Canaria and the Canary Islands. The warning comes into place officially Saturday 12th May at noon and will continue until Sunday evening.
The temperatures are already on the rise and visibility due to a calima or desert storm is going to decrease in the next few days.

UPDATE:AEMET have upgraded the weather warning from yellow to orange for Sunday 13th and Monday 14th May in the Eastern Canary Islands including Gran Canaria. Temperatures are said to reach 38ºc degrees over the weekend.
May 4th 2012
Plaza Perez Galdos is a nice place to relax and take shade on hot days in Arguineguin. At midday in May the temperatures can get pretty intense and so a seating area under a shady tree can be tempting. The leaves from the tree providing shade, made a pretty frame for the Church in our photo of the day.

May 31st 2011
It’s the last day of May and we are getting well into the Summer season here in Puerto Rico Gran Canaria. The weather is pretty much the same as last week, a layer of haze but hot temperatures around 29ºC degrees.
May 16th 2011
Arucas and Artenara have reported hail today as Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura experienced electrical storms and early morning rain. There has been no significant change in temperature.

May 28th 2010
It’s a big bank holiday weekend and Sunday is Día de Canarias, so hit the beach and soak up some Summer sun rays. Grab a cool drink, sunscreen and all the beach or pool essentials, including a good book and relax.
May 21st 2010
What can I say, it’s a beautiful day in south Gran Canaria! The sun is shining and the sky is slightly hazy, making it a great start to the weekend. Sit back, relax and enjoy!
May 19th 2010
A beautiful day with temperatures around 26ºC degrees, the sun high in the sky and a gentle breeze which cools you down just when you need it. The forecast is looking great for the week ahead with sun, sun, sun.
May 16th 2010
The sound of Sunday in the south of Gran Canaria at 08:50h. The happy chirpy tweets from the small birds outside and a dog yapping in the distance, you have some choices, you can roll over and enjoy some more hours snoozing, or you can get out and explore the island.
It’s currently cloudy but fresh and looks like the sun will be out later on. If yesterday is anything to go by it will be scorching hot, with temperatures over 30ºC degrees. Enjoy!
May 14th 2010
The temperature is about 25ºC degrees at the moment which makes for a lovely Friday afternoon, the weekend is finally here and the forecast is looking good!
May 12th 2010
A fresh and cloudy start to this Wednesday morning. The sun is fighting it’s way out, here's hoping it improves for later on today, which I am sure it will, even as I type this it’s is brightening up. It’s still warm outside with current temperatures of around 23ºC degrees and climbing.
May 11th 2010
Today started off lovely and bright! A great start to Tuesday. It was cloudy in Vecindario, a lot cooler and it was starting to rain when I left.
The sun was still shining down here in the south but in the last hour or so huge black clouds have come over from further inland. It’s still fresh and not cold at all, but might be a good idea to keep an eye on your washing.
May 10th 2010
Not a cloud in the sky today, it looks like Summer is here at last! Grab your swimwear and head to Amadores or Puerto Rico beaches, get some cold drinks, sunscreen, a parasol and you’re ready to roll.
May 9th 2010
Welcome to a lovely fresh Sunday in the south of Gran Canaria! Temperatures are around 25ºC degrees, the birds are chirping and there is a thin layer of cloud over the blue sky letting the sun peep through.
Grab a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice or an aromatic coffee and take in the beautiful views from the nearest balcony.
May 8th 2010
What a mixed day of weather we have had! This morning I went along to the car boot sale for TARA animal charity in Arguineguin, get bargains and help the animals at the same time.
So as I was up early, I saw the weather totally change from red hot to cloudy and spitting for about 10 minutes. Right now, out of my window the sky is the bluest of blue, birds cheeping and no sign of rain we had earlier.
There is less chance of rain tomorrow now but according to forecasts the week ahead looks a bit cloudy.
May 7th 2010
Another cloudy day that turned bright and sunny! Right now I can smell a barbecue and what better time for one?
Temperatures have been pleasant once again and around 26ºC degrees although cooler this evening and some cloud further inland so let’s hope the weekend stays dry for the Pride celebrations in Maspalomas.
May 6th 2010
What a lovely day we have had today. It started off very overcast and grey and then late afternoon the sun fought its way out to reveal a beautiful sunset. The forecast is cloudy for tomorrow and a possibility of rain on Saturday and Sunday in the south.
May 5th 2010
It’s been a really lovely day today in general and the forecast at AEMET has been unreliable for the south of the island this last week or so. Temperatures are good and right now there is a welcome breeze.
May 4th 2010
Earlier this morning it was quite cloudy and almost look like it was going to rain, but as the day progressed the sun came out and the skies went back to their usual bright blue colour. The forecast is looking fine so far, temperatures currently around 27ºC degrees.
May 3rd 2010
The calima has gone, the skies are cloudy but it’s much fresher and we can breathe again. Yesterday it looked like it was going to rain in Las Palmas and it is forecast, but here in the south of the island it’s just overcast and fresh with the sun trying to come through.
May 2nd 2010
The calima is still here but the sky is becoming clearer and the horizon sharper. It looks like Las Palmas has started to cloud over now, so there could be some rain in the north, hopefully the sandy skies will go soon.
May 1st 2010
It’s starting to feel like the calima is on it’s way out (which we have had for last couple of days), the skies looked less thick with dust before and blue skies where starting to appear in the distance.
We need a little bit of rain to get rid of the sand and dust then the skies will return to their usual turquoise and we will all be able to breathe again.
This is not the worst calima I have known so not complaining to much, seems we have had quite a few this year already.
Later that day:
Today has still been a hot one, but it now feels like the calima is on it’s way out. The sky is greyish blue and it feels a little fresher when the breeze gets up. Looks like the wind will change direction on Monday with temperatures in top 20’s at the moment.

May 25th 2009
Scorchio, scorchio nice and hot today temps must be around 28ºC degrees in south Gran Canaria.
May 18th 2009
The beach was excellent today as I enjoyed some rays down in Las Meloneras. Temperatures around 30ºC degrees with a nice wind.
May 16th 2009
Can’t beat the weather lately sunny sunny sunny! Make sure you are using suncream even when just walking round as you can get burnt more easily now.
May 9th 2009
Muggy is the word! It started off very sunny earlier on and then the clouds came making it easier to walk to the shops. Once I got down to the shops I was sweating, instead of staying cool it went all muggy and clammy. Looked like rain earlier too but let’s see, looks like cloudy with bit of sun for the next week!
May 7th 2009
Another beautiful day with temps in the 30’s or so. It was even baking hot in Vecindario yesterday and out to sea looked very hazy indeed.
Dare I say we have a calima on the way?
May 3rd 2009
The day has been sunny off and on and when the sun is out it is very hot, but the clouds have made an appearance again and looks like they are covering the south as I have been up to Playa del Ingles, Puerto Rico and Tauro and it looked very much the same.
The webcam was stuck at 07:00h this morning, even then it was 22ºC degrees.
20:00h – Funny day for weather, was cloudy like I said earlier this afternoon and then the sun has come out again this evening, great for sitting on the balcony with a fruit smoothie!
May 2nd 2009
Yesterday was hot hot hot with a few welcome wispy clouds. I even burnt my arms not nice! It was bank holiday Friday yesterday and the beaches were totally full with people enjoying the sun.
Temperatures must have been around the 30ºC degree marker once again which is becoming a steady temperature lately.
This morning around 10:00h it is a bit cloudy but very fresh and great weather for sitting on the balcony and eating cereal and drinking fresh coffee.
17:30h – The sun did come out and it was hot but now it has gone overcast. Still pleasant however and not cold.
